Hot Bags

Every woman worth her Fendi knows how important a combination the belt and handbag are. If you get this one wrong, you might as well throw out the entire ensemble! Such fashion faux pas as wearing a brown belt and carrying a black bag would almost never be committed by even the most inexperienced fashionista. This is almost as bad as wearing black shoes with a brown bag! However, any woman who really wants to stand out in the fashion world knows that it’s not good enough to just skip the fashion faux pas. Rather, we need to make our mark and maintain our status as fashion forward! How does one do this? By choosing belts and bags that more than simply ‘work together’, they work for you because they are just hot!

One example of hot is what we call the "rhinestone cowboy" look. Yes, the 10 gallon hats are a thing of the past and the western look has lost the appeal it had in the last couple of seasons, but there are still many belts and bags out there that are adorned with large buckles, big rhinestones, and a combination of the two. Wide belts are still quite popular and the more glamorous the belt and bag combo, the better. Colored rhinestones in both the bag and belt are a new trend and so long as they are worn carefully, they can really make a statement with your favorite jeans.

Another really popular belt for the spring 2009 season is the tassel belt. There are thick sash belts and thin rope belts with tassels that are popular this season. Most popular on dresses, they can be found in a vast array of colors and are most often done in soft fabrics such as silk or satin. The tassel is what makes it different, so be sure to don a belt with the tassel rather than the run-of-the-mill sash belt that you will also see on the runways this year.

Chain belts are also making a comeback for 2009, which is a great addition to the wardrobe because chain bags are also back! Seen on the arms of many fashion divas these days are cute crystal or metallic bags with chain link straps, so be sure to grab your little bag like this when wearing your chain belt. Of course, you will want to be wearing the same metals and not clashing gold with silver. This look is great with a sheath dress in a solid color, but can also be worn with a blousy, long top over pants so long as the belt hangs right.

Leather belts will never lose popularity. This season, the braided leather belt is a hit, and obviously you would want to wear this belt with a leather bag and nothing else. It is far too casual a look to pair with an evening bag or any other purse. The leather bag with wider straps, in a tote style, or hobo slouch, is what works best with the braided leather belt, for trips to the mall or the movies or visiting a friend. Casual is the key here!

Patchwork belts are seen on lots of dresses this spring. This is a difficult belt to pair with an outfit, let alone a handbag. One would think that a patchwork belt would be the ultimate in casual fashion, but this is not the case. This belt most often makes its appearance on white or black, as there are so many colors in the patchwork and the belt is usually textured. Popular textures are leather, suede and vinyl or even a combination of the three. White dresses or long white buttoned-down shirts are where it is really finding a home. As for bags that go with this belt, a simple solid color is best. Black bags, for the most part, are perfect when you wear this belt unless you can find the exact shade of white to match the shirt you are wearing. Depending on the color of your shoes, you could also get away with a bag the color of your shoes if the patchwork is worn against a solid shirt. The patchwork belt is often donned for dressier occasions.

No matter if you are dressy or casual, you certainly need to have your belt and bag complement each other. The best way to do that is to watch the runways this season and you will see just what works and little of what does not. Some of it is common sense, but some fashion trends are new this year. It is always a good idea to pay attention, lest you come out looking like you never picked up a copy of Vogue in your life!
