Smokey Mountain
North Carolina is a state in the southeastern portion of the United States of America, on the Atlantic Seaboard. Georgia and South Carolina are located south of North Carolina, Tennessee is located west of North Carolina, and Virginia is located north of North Carolina. Its total area of approximately 139,000 square kilometers (around 54,000 square miles) make it the 28th largest state in the USA. It has a fairly large population of 9,222,414, making it the tenth most populous state.
North Carolina is an impressive place to visit because its intriguing landscapes offer the visitor plenty of opportunities for fun and adventurous outdoor activities. Hiking, skiing, mountain climbing are easily accessible in the Blue Ridge mountains and Great Smokey mountains in the western region of the state. You can also experience a bit of Appalachian culture and music in this area.
In eastern North Carolina you can experience a different type of atmosphere, since this is the coastal region where marine activities like windsurfing, fishing, and swimming abound. Of particular interest are the neverending stretches of empty secluded beaches in the Outer Banks and Crystal Coast areas. This region is also the location of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina where the Wright Brothers gave birth to flight, so this area is important in aviation history.
The Piedmont region in the center of North Carolina is largely flat farmland where most of the large cities and towns are located. Tourists are not likely to spend much time here but are likely to pass through and stop in the capital Raleigh or the largest city Charlotte. Since Raleigh is the state-capital, it has a number of political and cultural sites that justify a visit.
The one must-see site that I thoroughly recommend in all of North Carolina is the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. It is NC's most highly-visited national park and is full of amazing natural splendor that will enchant and impress.
